Berlin-based electronic pop duo Tarwater were formed in 1995 by Bernd Jestram and Ronald Lippok (To Rococo Rot). So far, they have released 12 studio albums on labels including Kitty-Yo, Morr Music and Bureau B. With their often loop-based music and characteristic half-sung, half-spoken lyrics, the duo have developed a style that incorporates different influences on each album, yet remains distinctly their own.
In recent years, Tarwater have turned to producing for film, theatre and audio books. This led to collaborations with Iggy Pop and Alva Noto (»Leaves of Grass«, 2016), adaptations of texts by William S. Burroughs (»The Cat Inside«, 2021) and most recently, an award-winning radio play based on a poem by Nick Cave, featuring Paula Beer, Tilda Swinton and Alexander Fehling, among others (»The Sick Bag Song«, 2024).
The desire to collaborate and engage with other author’s material is also evident on their upcoming album »Nuts of Ay«, to be released by Morr Music in 2024. It features performances by Masha Qrella, Carsten Nicolai and Lars Rudolph, as well as songs with lyrics originally written by artists such as John Lennon, Jaan Kenbrovin, Milner Place and Derek Jarman.
